Anonymous asked: Masturbation is still grave matter, and with grave matter such as missing Mass on Sunday, if done with full knowledge and intentionally, is indeed a mortal sin. You do need to go to confession to be absolved of it if you have intentionally (aside from factors such as habit and being addicted to it - which still does not take away your mortal capability for it) committed it. I also disagree with your thinking that mortal sin is rare... (con)

I didn’t get the rest of this, I’m afraid. But I’ll go ahead and respond as best I can.

I don’t really have any expertise on the matter, I have only the Catechism to go off of, which clearly states that there are factors which can lessen the sinfulness of masturbation. I agree that in many circumstances, masturbation does meet the three requirements of mortal sin, which are as follows:

But, I think that in many instances, masturbation does not meet either the second or the third requirement. The second, because often this matter is not adequately catechised, and our culture tells us quite strongly that there is nothing wrong with it. The result is that otherwise faithful Catholics simply see nothing wrong with it. The third requirement, because even when one realized the sin in it, it has become a difficult habit to break.

I could be quite wrong in my assertion that mortal sin is a rarity. Really, only God knows for sure. But my reasoning was that, as in the case of masturbation, most of us are simply too confused to recognize the gravity of our sins.

Mea Culpa

Hail and thunder knock my heart cold from the sky

Mary seems so far away.

full of deceit and empty of

grace, I go to the place

blessed by those whose lives are pure

art, like a Caravaggio, like a pieta.

Thou liveth

amongst us, we broken

women and men. why hath thou

Blessed us?

is the fruit of our sins so sweet?

of thy desires I know nothing.

womb to tomb we are nothing but cells and dirt!

Jesus.

Holy - words like butterflies from the sky

Mary, I have no other hope. what is the

Mother of our depravity?

God. I cover my face. I try and fail to

pray. I am the damned and

for us damned there is no rest,

sinners until the earth rises in wrath.

now and then I am reminded that

at the hour of judgement,

of our glory, the last enemy destroyed is

death.

“It’s not as simple as that. It’s not a black and white issue. There are so many shades of gray.”

“Nope.”

“Pardon?”

“There’s no grays, only white that’s got grubby. I’m surprised you don’t know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.

“It’s a lot more complicated than that –”

“No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.”

“Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes –”

“But they starts with thinking about people as things …”

Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett (via theroadrisesup)

There are no words for how much I love this book.

(via badwolfcomplex)

Interesting thing for a guy like Pratchett to write. True, though.
